Qatar’s Tamer Abdelrasoul and Assam Ahmed Mahmoud made it to the round one in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Satun 1-Star with one win and one loss in Satun, Thailand on Tuesday.

The Qatari pair, seeded ninth, had a superb start against the eighth seeds Fan Shen and Kingsley Tay from Singapore and the first set put them on a roll. They went on to beat the rivals 21-11, 21-17 in 35 minutes.

In the second match of Pool A, they met with top seeds Bahman Salemiinjehboroun and Arash Vakili from Iran.

Salemiinjehboroun and Vaikili controlled the flow of the game well and beat Abdelrasoul and Mahmoud 21-15, 21-13 in 39 minutes to post their second win in a row. In another group match, the Singaporeans defeated Thai rivals Santitham Khruttha and Poravid Taovato to move to the knockout stage, along with the Iranian and Qatari teams.

In 2017, Salemiinjehboroun had won the Asian title with Rahman Roufi against Indonesians Ade Candra Rachmawan and Mohammad Ashfiya. But last year he and Vakili were beaten by Qatar’s star players Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan in the final.

For Abdelrasoul and Mahmoud, their next challengers are 10th-seeded Phichakon Narathon and Phanupong Thanan from Thailand.

The second-seeded Kazakh pair Alexandr Dyachenko and Alexey Sidorenko, the 2013 Asian champions, topped Pool B, following their win against Austria’s Jakob Reiter and Simon Baldauf 2-1 (21-7, 31-33, 15-13) and Ukraine’s Vladyslav Iemelianchyk and Denys Denysenko 2-0 (27-25, 21-14).
Thailand’s Kitti Duangjinda and Dunwinit Kaewsai and Hungary’s Artur Hajos and Balasz Benko won Pool C and Pool D, respectively.

The Thais came up with straight-set wins over New Zealand’s Thomas Hartles and Alani Nicklin (33-31, 21-18) and Russia’s Daniil Kuvichka and Anton Kislytsyn (21-19, 21-19), while the Hungarians prevailed against Kazakhstan’s Dmitriy Yakovlev and Sergey Bogatu 2-1 (19-21, 21-16, 22-20) and Thailand’s Banlue Nakprakhong and Narongdet Kangkon 2-0 (21-19, 21-15).
